I was in Oklahoma county jail for 4 months while waitiing to be sentenced for a bad check from 3 years prior. I was in the OK DOC at the time and was transported to the jail to wait for this. I was forgotten while I was there by the court system, my sentencing should have take 1 week at the most. Then while in the jail the food was horrible. I am a strong advocate of teaching people to do right, and I do beleive the prisons are in some ways to easy for people. But come on, we convicted the officers of the concentration camps for starving people like this. Its insane. The true fact is almost every one of those people in there is going to be someones neighbor at some point. Do you really want to fill them with hate and anger more than they already are. There are no programs there though many people spend more than a year there. A year that could be put to good use. In the Washington state county jails and many others, they have GED programs, Domestic Abuse programs, Drug rehab programs, etc. All of those are done on a volunteer basis. And it helps to shape the person while there. Did you ever hear the phrase an idle mind breads contempt. Or keep busy to keep out of trouble. These are very true. So lets see, you put people in jail where they are treated much less than human, you feed them less than what a small child would eat, you keep them in a cell 23 hours a day with who knows what the other person is there for, then you expect this person to come out and be a model citizen. Ummmmmm I have seen the people in the prison who come out angry and come right back in. Don't get me wrong it is up to you to change yourself and do right, but just like an abused child is affected by their treatment so is an inmate who has been treated inhumane. We do pay taxes and I do not have a problem paying a small extra tax to make sure these people are fed and treated like humans. I do not want to have to worry about the extra anger they will pick up in prison. To the person who said don't go to jail if you don't like it. I want to tell you generally you can control what happens to you. But in 2006 I was arrested in a case with my son. I called the police and reported him for abusing my grandson, but I did not call DHS. I thought it is a crime you call the police. I was arrested for failure to report child abuse. The charges were dropped at the first hearing but I did get arrested for it. So see sometimes even if you don't do anything you can be arrested. It's not a good situation by any means, but lets not hate these people but hate what they did. They may be your neighbor one day.

When you first get there, they put you in a holding cell for around six hours. In there you only get wet bologna sandwiches. I was so disgusted I threw mine on the wall and it stuck. Seriously, it splattered on the wall and stuck! And the bar they're talking about is after they take you upstairs with a mat and some toiletries. They handcuff you to a bar at about waist level. You usually wait there for several hours while they try to find you a cell. Everyone tries to sit down to get comfortable but your hand is stuck in the air and usually gets numb and you have to stand up to get feeling back in your hand. Even if you secure a bondsman the minute you walk in, you're still going to be there for 12 at the least, and have to go through the whole process of changing into orange clothes and sandals (that are usually 2 different sizes, dirty with previous foot grime and half ripped apart. Hanging on that bar can be very miserable!

Because no one will force the issue. If you ask for media coverage, it's always pre planned, and usually only the second floor. What we need is a Federal Officer to go in under cover to bring to light what is REALLY GOING ON!!!

Just wait till you're down and out. I've been there before because I couldn't afford to pay my traffic tickets. So what if I'm poor, I'm a good person. I've seen farm animals treated better than the inmates at Oklahoma County. BTW, I pay taxes too and I'd like to see this jail get an overhaul. Ask around the country and prisons, Oklahoma County Jail is one of the WORST IN THE ENTIRE NATION!!!

That's the problem with our society. Everyone deserves a decent meal and I guarantee that OKLAHOMA COUNTY JAIL does NOT feed properly. They receive funds for that particular area and still do not use them correctly.

As Joyce Gilchrist's cases show, not everyone in jail is guilty of the crime they are incarcerated for. Our justice system was based on the premise that you are Innocent Until Proven Guilty (IUPG), but the way people are treated anymore is totally opposite. I can understand becoming cynical when dealing with criminals, but if the original concept of IUPG is followed, these people need to be treated fairly
