Oklahoma County Jail

Inmates

Interview with Luis, Kelly and Krissie

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates?
Luis: Not for the most part I didnt. Of course there were a couple of obnoxious black kids but there wernt a big deal. anytime you get around blacks you just gotta expect them to be loud and obnoxious and just deal with it as best as possible. these kids understood very quickly that the rest of us wernt gonna put op with their crap so they got in line after a few minutes.

Note: Jail Media does not condone racism in any way, shape or form. We thought we would be doing our readers a disservice, however, by censoring interviews - it is important for anybody wondering about what jail is like to understand what mentality really exists in jail.
Kelly: no
Krissie: No. Even though there are always the bad ones, there is an overall feeling of camaraderie among the female inmates.

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Luis: Not much since we were all locked down in two man cells for 72 hours at a time without a shower might I add.So it was just me and my cellie and we just mostly read books and talked.
Kelly: kept to myself
Krissie: I just avoided the loud ones because they usually make the most trouble.

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate if you knew one?
Luis: No way man!! What have you been smoking?
Kelly: no
Krissie: No, they put me in a cell with two other women. It was crowded, but we got along.

A Justice Department report rips the Oklahoma County jail as a chaotic and largely unsupervised den of "unconscionableā€ violence, abuse and medical neglect.

Detailed in the federal report are jail deaths, excessive use of force and a "disturbingā€ incident in which a pregnant woman was handcuffed to a rail for 10 hours while giving birth to a premature baby.
The child died at a metro-area hospital.

However, the seriousness of the report led the U.S. Marshals and Immigration and Customs Enforcement to transfer 160 federal inmates from the Oklahoma County jail over the weekend to jails in Tulsa and Grady counties until the issues are officially resolved.

The report details excessive inmate-on-inmate violence and use of force by jail staff, an unsanitary kitchen with birds and insects, lack of clothing and showers, several fire hazards and virtually no mental health treatment. There is also an inadequate investigatory process to review deaths and other serious incidents, according to the report.
The U.S. Attorney General could file a lawsuit against Oklahoma County if conditions do not improve, according to the report.

I hope the DOJ takes them over! I am voting NO on the new tax they are going to propoe. At least if DOJ does it then we know it is done right. They have been under investigation since 2003, enough already. If you want to keep him as sheriff fine, BUT he has no business running a jail. I only hope that too many more babies dont die or people get beaten to death before this ends. It makes me sick that this goes on in America.

as of 4-7-10 the conditions have not improved. I'm not sure what the the DOJ investigated but it did not do a good job, it smells like trash the floors are mopped with a dirty mop and this is the visiting room. In late Feb early March one of the floors did not have water for 24 hours. Contacted the person in charge and it was stated that they were working on getting it fixed and they were bring the inmates water every two hours, that was a lie. I understand the reason they have jail, but they are human beings and they dont deserve to be treated like they are living in the wild. I agree with you totally he should not be running a jail and most of the people that he has employed there should not be working there. I feel my tax dollars was poorly spent and someone higher up should take a look into this matter. the DOJ should come unannounced and they would be shocked to see the poor conditions.

JM... what is up with you? So only the "black kids" can act up? You must not have stayed long enough. Black, white, brown and purple can all go to jail for various reasons and all get treated like dirt from the people our tax dollars pay. That was not cool at all for you to say about African American people. It just knocked you down about 10 levels of integrity.

Getting along in jail is generally up to the individual or as charged. As an inmate you go where you are assigned and do as the jailer directs you to do, and listen. If an inmate acts up .. they will be escorted away from the general population and housed by themselves until they can behave. Cooperation goes a long ways. Safety and security in a jail often gives an inmate a false sense of security ...due to the fact if a jail had thousands of jailers .. it wouldn't mean a particular inmate would remain
safe from others housed in jail .. nothing in any jail is secure .. one can only hope their experience in a jail went without incident .. and most inmates serve their time without problems from others .. but the potential threat is always present in any jail.
